What SLM is?
Soulaje Lespri Moun was developed in April 2010 by Haitian professionals and paraprofessionals to provide mental health intervention and disaster preparedness training. Soulaje Lespri Moun is recognized as a public organization by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labour and duly registered as No STE-21327.
SLM was developed in April 2010 by Haitian professionals and paraprofessionals to provide psychosocial support in the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake. SLM consists in one Project Manager (Roger Noel), one Project Administrate (Merry Roche Jean Pierre) and fourteen young people trained as Lay Mental Health Workers and Researchers “Chèchè \Ajan Sante Mental”. SLM team members possess special training in trauma recovery including gender-based violence and in disaster risk reduction strategies. Since April 2010, the SLM team has conducted comprehensive assessments of mental health needs among IDPs (January 2011;July 2012; March 2013) and run spychosocial support groups in eight metropolitan Port-au-Prince IDP for nearly a thousand participants (funding provided by the University of Michigan). A series of evaluation studies (in Carradeux, Building 2004, Henfrasa, Olympia and Toto camps) revealed that SLM participants showed significantly decreased symptoms of depression, PTSD, and culturally-specific symptoms of distress and increase use of both spychological and indigenous (cultural and religious) coping skills. Additionally, lay mental health workers implementing the SLM intervention experienced improved mental health, low level of compassion fatigue, and high level of job satisfaction.
